David Steiner has a long and distinguished history as a real estate developer. Chairman of Steiner Equities Group LLC, his expertise lies in the development of industrial and office parks and commercial facilities in New Jersey and 13 other states. Steiner Studios, a Hollywood-style film and television production facility that opened in the fall of 2004 in Brooklyn, is Steiner’s first major project in New York City.
With his son Douglas, David Steiner built Steiner Studios, an unprecedented 280,000 square-foot, $150 million state-of-the-art film and television production facility. Situated on a 15-acre site at the historic Brooklyn Navy Yard, Steiner Studios has already housed numerous major film productions including, The producers; The Movie Musical; Fur; Inside Man; Across the Universe; Super Ex-Girlfriend; Spider Man III, Nanny Diaries and The Hoax.
He is presently working in partnership with Valerie Harper and Tony Cacciotti to produce the DVD for Golda’s Balcony, as well as the Israel and England Tour. In addition, he is a Trustee of the Actors’ Fund of America and is working on building a new home for the Folksbiene National Yiddish theatre as a Board Member. Mr. Steiner is also a Member of the Board of Directors of National Yiddish Book Center.
Steiner Equities Group, based in Roseland, New Jersey, has designed and built over 10 million square feet of commercial property, including some of the largest build-to-suit office and laboratory projects in the United States. Steiner’s in-house services include development, financing, leasing and management. Steiner Building Company performs construction and general contracting. Led by the father-son team of David S. Steiner and Douglas C. Steiner, the company is privately held.
Projects built by Steiner Equities include: a 1.86 million square-foot research laboratory facility for AT&T Labs in Middletown N.J.; Bridgewater Towne Centre, a 570,000 square-foot mixed-use center anchored by Wegmans, Home Depot and Expo in Bridgewater, N.J.; and Manalapan Epicentre, a 460,000 square-foot shopping center anchored by Wegmans, Target, and T.J. Max in Manalapan, N.J.
A sought-after speaker at development agencies and organizations across the US, Mexico and Canada, Mr. Steiner has spoken at industry forums, including events sponsored by the New York University Real Estate Institute, American Bankers Association, Society of Industrial and Office Realtors, New Jersey Mortgage Bankers Association, Northeast Industrial Developers Association, and the Urban Land Institute.
In addition to serving as a member of the Board of Commissioners of the Port Authority of New York and New Jersey, Mr. Steiner is highly active in public service. He is a founder of the National Association of Industrial and Office Properties (serving as National President, 1973-1974), Mr. Steiner was named Developer of the Year in 1990 by the National Association of Industrial and Office Properties (NAIOP); State of New Jersey Economic Development Council; President 1988/89 for the Office Developers Association; the Urban Land Institute; Member State of New Jersey Commerce Commission; Chairman, Tri-state Regional Planning Commission; Council of Economic Advisors; and Trustee 1986-1988, the New Jersey Industrial Development Association and founding Trustee and treasurer for the New Jersey Society for Environmental and Economic Development.
He has served on the American Israel Public Affairs Committee (National President – 1992); a member of the National Jewish Democratic Council since 1991, serving as Vice-Chair since 1994; Board member of the Jewish Community Housing Corporation and the National realty Committee (1988); and YM-YWHA of Metrowest. He is also the President of The Solomon Project, a non-profit organization founded in 1996 to educate American Jews about the rich history of Jewish civic involvement.
On the policy front, Mr. Steiner served as vice president of the Washington Institute for Near East Policy, where he worked alongside Alexander Haig, George Schultz, Larry Eagleburger, and Jeanne Kirkpatrick. While serving there, Steiner was instrumental in publishing the organization’s white paper entitled “Building for Peace” a policy proposal which was later adopted by the Administration. Mr. Steiner is also a member of the Saban Center for Middle East Policy at the Brookings Institution in Washington.
After graduating with honors with a Bachelor of Science from the Carnegie Institute of Technology (now Carnegie Mellon University) in Civil Engineering, Steiner served two years with the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers during the Korean War. As a first Lieutenant, Company Commander, he was a responsible for road, bridge, and building construction.
Mr. Steiner and his wife, Sylvia, live in West Orange, New Jersey. They have four children and nine grandchildren.
